Notes for Francis X. (Spouse 1)
Francis learned the farming trade from his father. He also became a carpenter and an undertaker. He lived for a time at the southwest end of Carrolltown, Pa., where Aaron Kane lived in 1936. He later moved to a farm adjoining St. Benedict's Cemetery to the south, a farm that was passed to his son, Dr. I. P. Strittmatter. The farm flourished and Francis is remembered for growing grapes, for which he made wine -- a difficult feat in light of the area's relatively cold climate. Francis' disposition was described as quiet and serious.

According to the 1880 Census, Francis Strittmatter was a 61 year old carpenter born in Pa., with his parents being born in Baden, Germany. His wife Elizabeth was a 52 year old housekeeper, born in Bavaria. They lived in Carroll Township with their children, including Celestine, a 22 year old farmer, born in Pa.
