Notes for Richard Homer Farabaugh
In his youth, Dick was a star left end wide receiver for the Manhattan College Jaspers, and was twice selected for the all-Metro team. In one newspaper account he was described as “an end who is a slippery ball carrier once he snatches a forward out of the air.”

Dick was a professional club football player for the Brooklyn Eagles in 1938 and 1939, as an end. The team belonged to the American Association, which had many shifting teams and a working arrangement as farm clubs for the NFL. The 1938 team played its home games at Ebbets Field and included Vince Lombardi as a reserve guard, finishing at 3-5-1. In 1939, the team did poorly, going 0-7-1.

He then became “faculty manager” at the McFadden School in New York, but by 1941 resigned the post to become football coach at Osceola High School, in Osceola Mills, Pa. He left the position when pressed into service for the USN during WWII. When assigned as a chief specialist to Yale University, he became an assistant football coach at that school during the war. After the war, he returned to Pennsylvania and became athletic director and assistant coach at Huntingdon High. In 1950, he was an assistant football coach at Connellsville High.

Dick relocated to Indiana, Pa., where he taught physical education, health and science, and was head football coach for the Indiana School District from 1950-1966. He also obtained a master's degree in education, before his retirement in 1979. He led the Indiana Little Indians to a Class A Championship in 1956. In 1957, despite having lost many starters to graduation, Dick coached his team to a perfect record, earning an award for “Coach of the Year.”
