George began working as a butcher like his father. He was a Sargeant First Class in the Army’s medical corps during WWI, serving from 13 Jun 1917 to 25 Jun 1919. He lived in Philadelphia in 1935, before moving back in with his mother’s extended Altoona family home in 1940, and worked as a “supervisor” of “public assistance.” His draft registration card indicated he was a supervisor for the W.P.A. at the American Legion Youth Center in Altoona, Pa.
