Notes for Edward William Farabaugh
Ed was raised in Carroll Township, Cambria Co., Pa. He attended the Eckenrode/Weber school. On July 6, 1896, he purchased a 90 acre farm in West Carroll Township from the estate of his first cousin Erhard Farabaugh, for $1500, located on what is now Ridge Road near Carrolltown. In 1900, he appears as a farmer at both locations. Ed typically worked his farm during the week and returned to the family farm on weekends, but he also had other pursuits hauling coal, red dog, hay and household goods in his wagon, maintaining roads collecting taxes and working for the WPA during the Depression. Ed farmed with horses and tamed a young bull that was harnessed up to a two wheel cart. Water was hauled from a nearby spring and it was not until 1940 that the family had a tractor. Ed died of pneumonia, according to church records. The cause from his death certificate is more elaborate (with mispellings), appearing to indicate he had hypostatic pneumonia with a pulmonary condition, contributed by endocarditis.
Notes for Mary Josephina (Spouse 1)
Mary was raised in Carroll Township, Cambria Co., Pa. Following her marriage and the birth of children she did housework and gardening. On Fridays, she would venture out by horse and buggy to Bakerton where she sold eggs, produce, butter, cream and other family products. Following Ed’s unexpected death, the young boys Melvin and George took over the farming operations, while attending school, and Russell left for the coal mines. George was the only high school graduate and joined the Air Force in 1941. On February 1, 1938, Mary and her daughter Viola purchased a home in Carrolltown from the estate of Mary’s brother-in-law William Springer, for $720, where Mary remained until her death.
