Notes for Earl Celestine Farabaugh
Earl and Thais lived in Carrolltown, Pa. The 1940 Census indicates he was a musician in a dance band. In 1948, it was reported that Earl narrowly escaped a coal mining accident at the Springfield Coal Company mine near Spangler, Pa. A mine car broke loose and struck a bar that knocked a roof support loose at a heading, causing a 30 foot high section of rock to collapse. The rock fall killed Earl’s friend, Ronald Justham. Earl escaped because he stopped a moment to get a drink of water before reaching the work area at the collapse.

Earl had political ambitions. As a Cambria County Republican, he tried to win election to the state Assembly in 1948, acquiring 19,437 votes, but all three seats went to Democrats. He again ran in 1956 and acquired 26,383 votes. This was not, however, still not enough to unseat any of the three Democraic incumbents, including his second cousin Englebert Farabaugh. Earl again lost in 1960.

In 1949, the Earl and Thais Farabaugh home was pictured in a full page ad placed by Penn Furniture in the Altoona Mirror. The ad promotes the home decorating skill of a Ms. Clara Dudley and a new Alexander Smith rug. It includes “before and after” pictures of the Farabaugh living room at 1120 Fifth Avenue. “See how Penn Furniture makes an old room new. . . [Ms. Dudley will] show you how you, too, can do what the Earl Farabaughs did. . .”.

Earl was an auditor for the State of Pa. An autopsy revealed that he died of medullary paralysis, caused by a massive infarction of the brain and occulsion of the right carotid artery.
