Notes for Lorans Wyland
Lawrence attended common schools in his youth, but was obligated to overtake farming duties at the age of 15, when his father died. At the age of 21, he and his brother Anthony purchased the homestead and Lawrence then bought Anthony out 4-5 years later. He worked the farm for the rest his life, supplementing his income in the lumber business and in dealing coal lands. In 1880, he entered a partnership with Joseph A. Gray, known as Gray & Wyland. The company engaged in the lumber and real estate trades, operating in West Virginia in addition to northern Cambria County. Lawrence was also connected with the Albert P. Wyland firm in Spangler, furniture dealers and undertakers. He also helped organize the Spangler Bank, and served on the local school board since its inception. He was a Democrat and member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
